Margaret (Wolf) Gagnon, more affectionately known as Grandma Maggie, went home to the Lord on February 22, 2008 with her family and friends at her side.
Margaret was born on June 2, 1916 on the family farm outside of Park, Kansas, attended school through the 8th grade and worked at the St. Joseph Hospital in Hayes, KS for two years to pay off her mothers’ medical bills. She worked six days a week and got to keep 5 cents of her two dollar a week wage for herself.
She met her future husband Melvin Gagnon at a restaurant/filling station she ran with her brother Wendelin. Margaret and Melvin married on January 9, 1940 and took up residence in Grainfield. Melvin was a diesel mechanic and his job caused them to move many times during their married life. They moved to Colorado in 1957 and lived in Westminster, CO until November of 1980 when they retired and moved back to Grainfield to be near family and the open spaces they loved.
In Colorado, Margaret worked as a Community home-maker for many of years and received several awards. She and Melvin were founding members of several Catholic Churches in Kansas and Colorado. Most recent she was member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield, and Spirit of Christ Catholic Church, Arvada. St. Ann’s Catholic Church of Arvada provided a weekly communion service at Colorado Lutheran Home which she attended until one week before her death.
Loving her grandchildren and making them their favorite home baked pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls and German potato salad as well as sewing dresses and dolls gave her joy. She and Melvin taught most of the grand children and some of the great grandchildren to play cards- the t.v. was seldom on during visits to their home and was not missed. Margaret was “Mom” to her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law and had a special bond with each.
Each fall Margaret and Melvin would get their 5th wheel ready and go south for the winter. She was a member of the St. Agnes Church in Grainfield and loved being part of the St. Agnes Ladies organization and enjoyed the many friends she made. She was often out playing cards with friends or working in her garden, sewing and crocheting. She was lovingly cared for by niece and nephew Marty and Sharon Gagnon in Grainfield, who lived across the street and not only took her to the store, post office, church, but also visited and checked on her daily
Margaret moved to Arvada, Colorado in January of 2000 to be near her son Gilbert Gagnon & her daughter Melva Stotler and their families. She lived in Sterling House Assisted Care and had her own apartment full of her favorite things including her porcelain doll collection and enjoyed many years of being pampered, going on excursions and being close to family. Weekends she would be in Gil & Trish’s kitchen baking and cooking with the family. She spent her last few years in Colorado Lutheran Nursing Home in Arvada, where she received excellent care and was a favorite of the staff who loved to see her smile.
